How to Enjoy A Healthy Smile for Life

Both you and your dentist want you to have a healthy smile for life.  And this is possible with good dental hygiene. Follow these tips to make sure your smile stays in good condition for the long term.

  • Find a dentist you feel comfortable with. Recommendations are a great way to start your search. The initial meeting is important, but it’s crucial that you consider how you feel about each visit after. If you feel anxious or scared at every visit, chances are you haven’t found the right dental team for you. Find a qualified dentist you’ll want to work with for many years. Get to know the dental staff too.
  • Don’t wait for the pain. Please note that not all dental issues trigger pain at their early stages. Some, such as gum disease, can be silent. The absence of a wound or pain doesn’t necessarily mean there’s nothing wrong. This is why it’s important to maintain regularly-scheduled dental appointments. Outside of this routine, if you notice any issue, inform your dental office immediately. They’ll help you determine if you need immediate attention.
  • Don’t ignore your gums and tongue. Oral care won’t be complete if you focus only on your teeth. Don’t forget to clean your gums and tongue too. When you keep your entire mouth clean, you prevent bad breath. In case you notice your gums are usually red or tender, advise your dentist right away.
  • Pay attention to what you eat. Your choice of food affects your oral health. Our mouths receive nutrients from our daily diet. It’s crucial to eat healthy. Sweet snacks are fine from time to time, but be sure to rinse them down with water to remove any residue until you can brush. Don’t forget natural teeth cleaners such as carrots and apples. They’re perfect, portable snacks!
  • Think before you drink.  Black coffee, black tea, and coloured beverages can stain your teeth. They can also contribute to your calorie and sugar intake. Try to cut down on these beverages and instead reach for more water. Water is both calorie- and sugar-free. It’s the best drink for our teeth and our entire body.
  • Pay attention to your device–but more on your brushing. It’s important to choose the right tool to clean your mouth, but it doesn’t end there. You also need to pay attention to the time you spend brushing and your technique. Make sure all corners and surfaces are covered. And always be gentle to avoid damaging your gums and the outermost layer of the teeth.
  • Stay on top of your routine dental check-ups. When was the last time you visited your dentist? The more regular your check-ups, the less time you’ll need to spend in the chair.  The more committed you are to your dental appointments, the more you will avoid complex dental treatments in the future.

The way to enjoy a healthy smile for life is by practicing good dental hygiene. Your dentist will provide great advice for your at-home care routine, but the rest of the job is yours.  Get started today!
